Tips & Tricks

Packing

  1. Invest in extra power. Get a small power bank to take with you. They are small, portable and a ready power source for all those electronics.

  2. Pack a plastic bag, and a ziplock big enough for your phone. A plastic bag takes up little room, but can be used for wet/dirty/smelly/muddy clothes or shoes, anything that could melt, etc. A ziplock is handy for many things, but can also protect your phone from sand or water. And the touch screen works through the bag. (I take a snack size for my phone, and a quart size for my Kindle.)

  3. Pack LIGHT! I hate to yell, but its that one time when you get off the subway and all the escalators are broken, you’ll wish you didn’t have to lug 42 pounds up endless flights of stairs. Or you booked an amazing stay at a tree house resort, only to realize there’s no elevators in tree houses.

  4. Earplugs, headphones or both.

  5. Sunscreen. Always, always pack sunscreen.

  6. Take an empty water bottle or Nalgene. Many airports have hydration stations (or just water fountains) where you can fill up. The last hotel I stayed at had a filtered water dispenser in the lobby, so I filled up every time I passed through. No, I’m not cheap, I’m reducing my plastic waste. You’re welcome, Earth!

  7. Pack items that are multi-purpose. Shampoo is also body wash, and a sarong is also a towel or blanket.

Lodging

  1. Ever stepped into a shower and the water is spraying in all directions or not at all? To easily unclog the shower head buildup rub your finger across the rubber holes in the shower head. Still not working? Take a safety pin or toothpick and poke it through the holes – this should loosen the clog and enable to water to flow freely.
